CHAPTER 15
“Do we have to go outside?” Wiggins asked as they got to the end of the catwalk. He looked at the flight of stairs and winced. Walking around on the crutch was hard enough on flat ground, going upstairs was worse. “It looked like the storm was just about to hit when we got here.”
“It always looks like a storm is about to hit up here. Once winter starts, it’s pretty much a constant.”
“Is that a yes or a no?”
“It’s a yes, but we don’t get the hail up here, we’re actually above that storm system most of the time.”
“Most of the time?”“It will be obvious if this isn’t a most of the time kind of day and we’ll make another plan. You’re not in a hurry, are you?”
“Actually, we very much in a hurry.”
“Well, let’s hope this is a most of the time kind of day then.”
“So, if we’re above the storm, what does happen? McReady said the storms are worse up here.”
“Not at the top they’re not, which is kind of the opposite of what people think it should be. They’re no joyride either. The sleet is a pain, literally it hurts, but it won’t beat you to death like the hail. The worst part is the wind. A good gust could toss you right off the mountain, but I engineered a solution to that.”
“I don’t suppose there’s an elevator?”
Gibson answered by starting up the stairs.
They reached the top and once again they were facing a door with a keypad by the doorknob. There was a metal box mounted on the wall on one side of the door and a bigger metal box on the other. Gibson opened the bigger box first. He pulled out a bulky coat and put it on. He reached in and came up with another coat, which he tossed to Penelope.
“Put it on and zip it tight. There should be gloves in the pocket; put them on as well,” he told her as he found a jacket for Wiggins.
He put on his gloves and pulled the hood over his head.
Wiggins and Penelope did the same.
“I said the wind was the worst, but the temperature drop can be very extreme. Even with these coats, we need to go fast. It can get cold enough to ice up your bloodstream.”
Wiggins leaned on his crutch. He didn’t think going fast would be an option. Gibson didn’t seem to care.
Gibson opened the smaller box and took out three pairs of clamps.
“Hook one end on the loop on the waist of your jacket,” he said as he handed them each a pair of the chrome clamps.
“What are these for?” Wiggins asked.
“My solution for the wind. There’s a cable outside. Hook up to it as soon as you step outside. It will keep the wind from blowing you off the mountain.”
“I have to admit, when you said you solved the wind problem, I was expecting some high tech kind of thing with nanobots or something.”
“How the hell would that work better than just strapping in?”
Wiggins shrugged.
